Project Phase

The proposed community project will be conducted in a one day session. There are several activities during the day to achieve the intended objectives of the project.

Figure 1.0: Project Structure

As shown in the above diagram, the proposed project consists of several activities to achieve the stated objectives.

The project will start off with a talk to the participants on the background of the nation, the importance of maintaining goodwill among the races, and related theme. Due to nature of the target participant (which is primary school children), the talk will not be too heavy in content, but more in a relax and fun way.

After the talk, the participants will get involved in lab activities. The objectives of the lab sessions is to inculcate the spirit of goodwill among the participants through computer related activities.

The first activity will involve an activity to create a greeting card(s) for another friend which must not be from the same race. The theme of the greeting card is the major festivity for that particular race such as "Hari Raya", "Gawai", "Chinese New Year", "Christmas" and so on. Therefore, the participants need to do some research (through asking their friend about the event or searching in the Internet for information). At the same time, the participants will be taught on how to use publishing software to create the greeting card. Thus, they will get some knowledge on IT related skill through this activity. To make the activity more interesting, there will be prizes for the best 3 greeting cards.

The second activity will have the same objective of nurturing goodwill among different races, but through different medium which is using audio. Students will be grouped together whereby each group will consists of different race. Each student in a group need to think and find out about folk song that they have heard before from their parents and so on. For example, student from Malay community might remember songs like "Rasa Sayang", "Lenggang Kangkung" and so on, while other students will find about their own folk song. Again, they will learn from each other about the song, and finally they will learn on how to record the song through computer, and learn how to use media player to play back the song.

The third and last activity is through video medium. Again the students will be grouped together as in activity 2. In this activity, they need to come up with a short sketch (ala Petronas Advert) with theme "Unity and Goodwill". Each group will then record their sketch using video cam and learn how to transfer and edit the video in computer.

Maxis is organizing another CyberlinQ competition this year. In line with the 50th Merdeka celebrations this year, Maxis has chosen the theme "What can you do for the Country? Begin with your own community" for the Maxis CyberlinQ 2007 contest and it invites young Malaysians to mark the country's Independence by giving back to the community through the contest.

We have decided to conduct a community project titled "Increasing the Spirit of Unity and Goodwill in Young Malaysians". We believe unity and goodwill among the many races in Malaysia is unique and very important in order for us to live peacefully and advance to become a developed nation by 2020 and beyond.

Project Objective

The are two main objectives of the proposed project:

  1. The main objective is to inculcate the spirit of goodwill and unity among the different races in Malaysia.
  2. To teach students basic computer skills, which is also support the first objective above.

Target Group
The target group of participants is from primary school children (tentatively Standard 5 students). The reason why we choose primary schoolchildren (i.e. younger generation) because it is very important to inculcate this spirit of goodwill and unity at the early age, since they will one day become the leader in the country. Furthermore, with many distraction such as TVs and other leisurely activities, they are probably not aware of this issue of unity and goodwill.

Expected Outcome

Although it is hard to measure the success of the project, what is more important is that through the activities, we hope that we can increase the awareness of the participants on the diverse cultural background of Malaysia, the importance of understanding other races and culture, and how we all can live together peacefully in Malaysia. At the same time, participants will get IT skills through the lab activities.

This is our contribution to MALAYSIA, "INCREASING GOODWILL SPIRIT AMONG YOUNG MALAYSIANS"
